SEDC has provided Acceptable Use Policy templates for over 5 years. They were very useful at the time, but the use and availability of educational technology, personal devices, social media, The Cloud and a thousand other web services have evolved. Our policies are in definite need of review and in most cases, it is probably time that these policies are updated to reflect these changes.
Many times, our current AUP’s are a long laundry-list of what kids should not do with technology in an educational setting. While we are updating policies, should we focus more on what students (and teachers) should be doing positively with school technology and less on the negative? Is it preferable to focus on responsible uses, or do we need to spell out everything students will be disciplined for doing?
